Steven Donziger, who defended indigenous people devastated by oil companies, was prosecuted by a Chevron-linked corporate law firm, and thrown in prison. You cannot make a mockery of US courts - they are by-and-large criminal operations, & mockeries of so-called 'justice'.

It's too bloody cold. Can it be summer again please.

“Fascism […] in essence it is simple. It’s a dictatorship. It’s nationalist. It loves guns and uniforms. It preaches a bogus mythology about returning to a better past. It likes traditional religion and traditional religion likes it. It demonises outsiders and subordinates women. It is not frightened to use violence.”

All from this morning.

The health system is now closed for winter, what we have left is an ambulance-at-the-bottom-of-the-cliff system.

Boosting system capacity takes time, but Govt and businesses can reduce demand right now with sensible protections like masks and ventilation.

Someone just said "30 years ago" and my mind went "ah, yes, the 1970s", but they meant 1992, and now I need to go lie down.

Can people please stop perpetuating the myth of staff shortages in the hospitality sector - businesses choose not to provide stable hours, they refuse to train up new staff, they refuse not to bring on qualified staff who need to be sponsored for a managers certificate to sell alcohol. The situation in the hospitality sector is of their own making.

If you work a full-time job, you should earn enough to pay rent, utilities, buy food, clothes, enjoy the weekend and have enough left over to pop in savings. This is apparently controversial.

Posted this on the hellsite earlier, but still...

I’ve seen lots of people using gifs and pics of guillotines in response to SCOTUS and Dobbs. I understand the urge, I do, it’s short hand for Revolution, I’ve used it myself, but you really need to stop.

First of all, even during the Revolutionary period, and especially during the Terror, most of the victims were not from the Monarchist-Aristocracy. By far the largest group of victims were the poor, both urban and rural, murdered for non-existent thoughtcrimes.

Second of all, the Guillotine remained in use after the terror. It remained in use through Napoleon and the Bourbon restoration, which meant it remained in use while the French occupied most of Africa. They also brought it with them to SE Asia.

France’s colonies were much the same as the other colonial empires (maybe not quite as bad as Belgium) and the Guillotines were drenched in the blood of Africans and Asians who interfered in the extractive imperial project.

So, please, stop. The Guillotine represents the power of the state against those it deems its enemies. It doesn’t represent liberation, it represents the power of the imperialist against the occupied. It’s a tool of the capitalist, not a symbol of the masses.

“China’s recent activities in the Pacific region — and the overreaction from some western nations — have seen discussions of Pacific Island countries that are increasingly patronising, framing them as vulnerable, and omitting their agency, writes Professor Steven Ratuva”

I love the straightforwardness of the German language. Today's example:

nackt = naked
Schnecke = snail
Nacktschnecke = slug

It's a naked snail, folks!

There are NZ opposition MPs out on social media celebrating the decision in the USA. Our opposition leader openly believes #Abortion is murder. It's mistake to think the next election is about tax cuts rather than full blown conservatism. This is a conversation we must have now
