On Saturday, I sat in a crowded ballroom at Caesar's Forum in Vegas and watched @sickcodes@twitter.com jailbreak a John Deere tractor's control unit live, before an audience of cheering @Defcon@twitter.com 30 attendees (and, possibly, a few undercover Deere execs, who often attend Sickcodes's talks). 1/

The interesting thing about capitalism is that it’s entirely incompatible with the future, so we’ve just decided to get rid of the future and keep capitalism

This is only going to work for a short while imo

I am sick and tired of people thinking being a "businessman" in any way qualifies you to be a public servant.

Councils and governments ARE NOT BUSINESSES that should be run for profit. They are there to serve the public and provide services.

I hate how people keep spreading around the idea that arms merchants are humanitarian aid now.

It's increasingly clear that the biggest problem with democracies is that the right people seldom want the job.

"this computer can run Windows 11" don't threaten me you piece of shit. I'll suplex you into the bin without a second thought. I'm only one good push from going full Linux Guy and ruining every dinner party by talking about TOR

@nextcloud This is what we need in NZ. Wondering if European school systems have this problem like we do in NZ: davelane.nz/explainer-digitech

I now use the latest nvmutil, to set *random* MAC addresses on every laptop I sell!

I sell ThinkPads with coreboot and Debian Linux on my store: minifree.org

Coreboot replaces proprietary BIOS/UEFI boot firmware giving you more secure control of your boot experience.

I wrote nvmutil myself, recently, to replace an older tool that I wrote before. One of its main benefits is that it can set random MAC addresses, hardcoded in the flash. This is the "default" MAC address, for your NIC.

“Tradition becomes our security, and when the mind is secure it is in decay.”
― J. Krishnamurti

This is quite an interesting quote which I can’t seem to find an implicit meaning too. It just states how we need to keep moving and changing. Hold onto the past and you probably won’t be able to make the next technological advancement.

Imagine if you allowed your entire country to become dependent on power from a fairly hostile 3rd party country. How would you explain allowing this to happen to your people when they're facing a cold winter, & forced to roll back all their climate change gains from shutting coal power plants?

Then imagine *your* country is in the very same position, but instead of gas, your gov't have made your country 100% dependent on proprietary software provided by a foreign corporation. We're there now.

RT @BeckettUnite@twitter.com

Private water utilities have racked up debt of £48bn since privatisation, with an annual interest cost of £1.3bn. Despite this debt, in the same period they’ve paid out £57bl to shareholders.

They pollute rivers; waste water; rack up debt and asset strip.

Nationalise water.

Using alt text is super important. Please continue to use it. It really makes a world of difference!!! I love how mastodon is very inclusive with all type of disabilities and everyone here is so kind. I have not seen any other social media use this much alt text. I just want to give a gentle reminder and a huge thank you!!!! :)

I requested very similar things (for slightly different reasons) in my recommendations for NZ's Digital Strategy in 2021: davelane.nz/suggestions-aotear Sadly, all of us have long been ignored by gov't. Here's hoping this new, indigenous resistance has more steel.

in order to view these images you have to install Windows 11 and then download a docker container with a Node.js server that you connect to using the latest version of chrome that renders the image to a canvas. you cant view the image locally since that would violate a same-origin policy, but thankfully the rendering is done remotely on a google GPU somewhere in the cloud, using a new standard called 'WebGPUThatsSomewhereInTheCloud' which is already obsolete and has been replaced with 'WebPCI-e'
