:mastodon: Mastodon tip: you can customize a column to list multiple hashtags (and block-list some of them too). It's a good way to discover all the posts gravitating around the topics you like (eg. for art, #mastoart is a popular one). That's really a feature I love here and wanted to share it to newcomers.

Another thing that new users may not realize is that your Mastodon account isn't limited to following other Mastodon accounts. Mastodon uses a common open source protocol called ActivityPub, and can interact with other services that use that same protocol. Pleroma, for example, or PeerTube, or PixelFed. It's like being able to subscribe to Instagram or YouTube from your Twitter account.

1/ In 2014, I warned if we didn’t prosecute Gamergate their tactics would become mainstream and poison our discourse. We didn’t and they did.

In 2015, I warned the FBI to look into 8chan, warning is was radicalizing people. We didn’t and they did.

New folks might be wondering about the CW option. It's pretty simple - it lets you add a content warning onto your toot, but also obscures the content so you have to click on it to see the content. People tend to use them fairly liberally here. I don't post anything I think is objectionable, but some people are sensitive to certain topics, and it is just polite (and respectful) to give them fair warning. Nice when browsing the local or federated timelines, where you could see anything! #NZTwits

I suppose I should do an 👋

I'm a postgrad student doing my MA in military history & learning to fly, on top of my day job. Love all things maritime, aviation or train related & also storytelling (writing, choreography, etc). I'm a keen traveller when the world allows & try to make the most of my own backyard (NZ /Oz) when it doesn't. Oh, and I love trees. Those who know me from twitter can tell you how much I love trees! 🌲 🍃 🌱 💚

I overuse emoji & I regret nothing.😎

Should really add to the above. Also, Ōtautahi eastside.

Donna is a small yet amazingly loud friendly cat who loves tummy rubs and sprays more than any cat I’ve ever known.

Profile says it all really, I drink a lot of cups of tea. Chat a lot while doing that. Part introvert part extrovert. Like people and information, interested in how those intersect in all kinds of ways. Gone back to study for later life career. Budget deeply, live simply. Parent. Fairly nerdy and arty. Live in an old house and overgrown garden. Have a small loud cat. Think lots. Ongoing learning about decolonisation and politics. No terfs. Foxes, sloths and capybara welcome.

Was going to tweet this but will toot it instead to see how this all works

Finally worked out how to toot properly! Tooting and tweeting for the time being to see how it all goes. Kia ora Aotearoa!
